Cape Town Becoming a Contemporary Art Hub

Cape Town Becoming a Contemporary Art Hub

By lightspeed, 26th July 2016 Posted in: Story Ideas

With the opening of the eagerly-awaited Zeitz MOCAA in September 2017; the spotlight is on Cape Town as a significant contributor to the world of art. Based at Africa’s most visit attraction, the V&A Waterfront, this not-for-profit cultural institution will house the most significant collection of contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora. The 100,000-square-foot Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa will be the biggest museum to open on the continent for more than a hundred years.

Cape Town has a rich, diverse and passionate artistic cultural scene. The city offers a variety of visual art experiences from the Maboneng Township Arts Experience that has transformed township houses into art galleries, to bronze sculptor tours, to an immense range of contemporary art galleries, open studios and foundries where visitors are fortunate to meet the makers themselves. The performing arts arena also offers a range of unexpected delights from the intimate Theatre in the Backyard, and the prolific Cape Town Opera Company’s regular works, to hilarious stand-up comedy routines and poignant spoken word poetry performances.
